Minnesota Tint Exemption Form — Download & Instructions
Learn how to obtain, fill out, and submit the Minnesota window tint medical exemption form — or skip the paperwork entirely with our online process.
The Traditional Minnesota Tint Exemption Process
If you prefer the traditional route, here's how the paper-based process works in Minnesota. Note that Minnesota does not have a single standardized form — the process relies on physician documentation:
Obtain Physician Documentation
Minnesota’s tint exemption is physician-driven, not form-driven. You need a written statement from a licensed Minnesota physician (MD or DO) certifying your medical condition requires darker window tint. There is no standardized DVS form to download — the physician creates the documentation.
Visit Your Doctor
Schedule an appointment with a licensed physician at Mayo Clinic, University of Minnesota Health, M Health Fairview, or your primary care provider. The doctor must confirm your condition and write a medical necessity statement specifying that you require window tint below the 50% VLT limit. Most PCPs won’t sign tint-specific paperwork, which is why many patients use our online service instead.
Ensure Proper Documentation
Your physician’s letter should include: their name, medical license number, practice address, your diagnosis, a statement of medical necessity for darker tint, and their signature. This document serves as your legal exemption under MN Stat §169.71 subd. 4.
Keep Documentation in Your Vehicle
Unlike some states, Minnesota does not require you to file your exemption with DVS or any state agency. Keep the physician’s documentation in your vehicle at all times. Present it to Minnesota State Patrol, Minneapolis PD, or any local officer if stopped for tint.
What Information Is Required?
Since Minnesota uses physician-created documentation rather than a standardized form, your exemption letter should include:
